A confidential source has told an official investigation that British authorities abandoned sensitive technology permitting Afghanistan's rulers to identify local individuals who collaborated with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Numerous in Danger

Person A, known as Person A, explained that people concerned by the security lapse were advised to relocate and change their phone numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

MPs are currently examining official handling of a massive disclosure of confidential data involving nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to move to Britain to escape the Taliban.

How the Leak Was Discovered

An electronic document including private information, including identities, phone numbers and in some cases family information, was mistakenly released by a worker stationed at British military command in early 2022.

The incident came to light only in August 2023, when the names of multiple applicants who had sought to relocate to the UK surfaced on Facebook.

Militant Technology

“There seems to be this misconception that the Taliban do not have similar capabilities that western nations possess,” she told lawmakers.

“We left it all behind in Afghanistan; it's in their hands. If they have a contact number, they are able to track your exact position. That's precisely what intelligence groups did.”

When questioned about regarding if authorities possessed sophisticated technology, Person A declared: “They possess all resources.”

Aftermath of the Data Breach

Early investigations submitted to the inquiry indicated that no fewer than forty-nine kin and colleagues of individuals impacted by the incident had been executed.

A superinjunction regarding the leak was implemented in August 2023 and prevented any information about it from media reporting until recently.

Protective Actions

Given injunction limitations, the source and the volunteer organization she was working with informed affected households they were working with that they had “apprehensions that somebody's phone had been compromised”.

“We recommended that they relocate where feasible and switched their phone numbers. These represented the primary information that, if authorities obtained these details, would result in them being traced,” Person A explained.

Challenged Assessments

The whistleblower contested that government assessment carried out by a former official had been mistaken to state that the acquisition of the records by militant forces was “unlikely to substantially change an individual's existing exposure”.

“The thing to remember is that affected people are in hiding from the authorities; they live secretly. All concerns relate to past work history.”

The source explained horrific treatment suffered by concerned people, involving electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and physical abuse.

“We have had young kids who have had bones crushed to pressure the family to reveal locations,” Person A stated.
