The acclaimed documentarian has become more than a filmmaker; he is a brand, a prolific creative force. Whenever he releases television endeavor heading for the small screen, everybody wants an interview.

But for Burns, whose entire filmography documenting American historical narratives including baseball, country music, jazz and national parks, the revolutionary period represents more than another topic but foundational. “As I mentioned to directing partner Sarah Botstein during our discussions, and she shared this view: no future work will carry greater importance,” Burns contemplates during a telephone interview.

Extensive Historical Investigation

Burns and his collaborators plus scripting partner Geoffrey Ward drew upon numerous historical volumes plus archival documents.
