New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.
“What reassures me, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
The coach did not know when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities issued security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was admitted to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “a ton” since he heard about the shooting. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on 18 August with a shoulder issue that needed an operation.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
